Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Underlying Mental Health Conditions
According to SAMHSA’s 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 9.2 million adults in the United States have a co-occurring disorder. Getting the right treatment that addresses all aspects of addiction is key to a successful recovery.
That’s why our team at Into Action Recovery has developed a program to address both the mental health aspects of addiction and co-existing disorders.
Mental health conditions we treat include:
What is a Dual Diagnosis?
Dual diagnosis is a mental health issue or challenge that impacts or influences your substance abuse addiction. Common disorders that are often associated with addiction include depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress.
Dual Diagnosis conditions can include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Is Dual Diagnosis Causing My Addiction?
In some cases, there is a clear connection between dual diagnosis and the start of substance abuse. We’re not able to clearly connect dual diagnosis to the onset of addiction. However, we do know that dual diagnosis typically makes addictive behaviors more common and more challenging to break.
What is a Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
Dual-diagnosis treatment addresses both substance addiction and mental health disorders rather than focusing on the addiction alone.
Patients who are a part of this program attend therapies and receive medication management based on their diagnoses.
Our treatments include:
Why Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment Important?
When a patient has a mental health condition on top of their addiction, but only the addiction is addressed in treatment, this can significantly impact the progress of their recovery. By also treating the mental health disorder, you’re treating the underlying problems that contributed to the addiction. That said, mental illness doesn’t always begin before the addiction. Substance abuse itself can trigger mental health symptoms, including anxiety and depression.
That’s why dual diagnosis is so essential – it targets both issues and treats them together.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment with Into Action Recovery
Addiction often occurs hand-in-hand with other emotional or mental challenges. If you’re suffering from substance abuse addiction alongside mental health challenges such as depression, you may have what addiction treatment professionals call “dual diagnosis.” In many cases, this dual diagnosis issue will make your addiction worse or, sometimes, even contribute to it in the first place.
It’s important to develop a customized treatment plan for your addiction that also addresses your dual diagnosis challenges.
Finding an addiction treatment facility that understands and properly treats dual diagnosis alongside substance abuse can be challenging. That’s why we’ve assembled a counseling team, led by our onsite medical director, that brings decades of mental health treatment experience to our programs.
