Crack cocaine is a concentrated form of pure cocaine manufactured from powdered cocaine. It is produced by dissolving powder cocaine in a solution of sodium bicarbonate and water. When the solution is boiled, the cocaine solidifies into “rocks,” which are dried and broken up to sell. According to the DEA, crack cocaine rocks are generally between 75-90% pure cocaine.

The rocks are smoked and produce an immediate high as the drug reaches the brain quickly and in high doses. The high does not last long, generally about 5-10 minutes, resulting in frequent use and high addiction rates. Crack is considered the most addictive form of cocaine.

Crack cocaine addicts experience severe behavioral changes, often exhibiting erratic, paranoid and violent behavior. Users are at risk for heart and respiratory failure, strokes, hallucinations, and convulsions. Over time, addicts are unable to hold down their jobs or honor their family obligations due to their behavior and increasing dependency on the drug. The habit is expensive and can bankrupt the addict.

At Into Action Recovery, we are sensitive to the causes of crack cocaine addiction and the physical consequences of both short-term and long-term use. Our compassionate staff works with each addict to develop a custom treatment program to provide you with the best opportunity for success.
